COVID-19 vaccine for children and young people
THL recommends (external link)the coronavirus vaccination to all children and young people aged 12 to 17. Minors can decide for themselves as to whether or not they want to be vaccinated. However, a health care professional must assess that they are mature enough in terms of development to make the decision. Legislation includes no age limit for a child’s right to self-determination but the matter will be assessed case-specifically.
We recommend to also offer coronavirus vaccinations to those children aged 6 months to 11 years belonging in risk groups who, based on an individual assessment, could benefit from the vaccination.
If a child or young person (minor) does not want to or is unable to make a decision on getting a vaccine, all guardians must give consent for the administration of a COVID-19 vaccine.
