Rehabilitation for people with intellectual disabilities

We assess the need for a rehabilitation plan and physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

The outpatient health care rehabilitation services of Western Uusimaa assess the needs of people with intellectual disabilities for physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy as well as the need for a rehabilitation plan. The majority of the rehabilitation is provided as intensive rehabilitation organised by Kela, in which case the providers are Kela's private contract therapists. The need for a rehabilitation plan is assessed by healthcare services. Becoming a client is possible at the end of a follow-up period in specialised healthcare or when a person with intellectual disabilities moves to the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County from elsewhere. If there is a need for other support, advice and guidance relating to intellectual disabilities in order to cope with daily life, please contact the rehabilitation planner in your area. The examination and treatment of illnesses, medication, urgent issues and specialised healthcare referrals for people with intellectual disabilities are managed or treated at their own health centre. Maternity and child health clinic services are also provided in the usual way.

Conditions for receiving the Service

The services are intended for children and adults diagnosed with an intellectual disability when younger than 18. Somatic treatment for people with intellectual disabilities within the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County is provided by health centres, as for other patients. The same applies to oral healthcare. Mental health and substance abuse services for people with intellectual disabilities are provided as basic level treatment organised by the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County, as for other patients. Other standard basic level outpatient services, such as maternity and child health clinic services, school healthcare, pupil welfare services, student health services, home care and home nursing are also organised by the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County. Basic level rehabilitation and its planning for people with intellectual disabilities are arranged through the local health centre or, for Espoo residents, the Espoo rehabilitation unit. Rehabilitation plans for Kela's intensive medical rehabilitation are created at health centres or, in Espoo, through the rehabilitation unit. The rehabilitation plan process is coordinated by the rehabilitation planner. Additionally, health examinations are conducted and the necessary certificates are prepared (for the transport service, for example) by the health centres. In matters relating to rehabilitation, guidance, advice or other support for people with intellectual disabilities, please contact the rehabilitation planner.

Rehabilitation services for people with intellectual disabilities are primarily free of charge. Check the fees of health centres on their websites.
