The free contraception trial

26.4.2023 12.36

The trial in which contraception is offered for free to people under 25 has been ongoing since 1 September 2022 in Hanko, Karkkila, Kirkkonummi, Lohja and Vihti. During the trial, all residents under the age of 25 in Hanko, Karkkila, Kirkkonummi, Lohja and Vihti, as well as clients of school and student health services in those municipalities, have had access to all contraceptive methods for pregnancy prevention (IUD, contraceptive implant, vaginal ring, pill, condom) regardless of gender. The most suitable method is chosen in consultation with a health care professional.

The trial has successfully reached residents and students in the areas, as evidenced by increased service usage. Since the start of the trial, there has been an increase in the demand for long-acting contraceptives such as IUDs and contraceptive implants. Research has shown that long-acting contraception is the most reliable method for preventing unintended pregnancies.

To obtain a contraceptive for free, you need to visit a family planning clinic or your school and student health nurse. There is no need for separate prescription renewals for those under the age of 25. Simply contact your local family planning clinic or school and student health services to obtain the contraceptive free of charge.

The trial will continue until 31 August 2023. A decision on the permanent implementation of the trial will be made within this year.
