Remote home care provides elderly people with security and joy
Remote home care, a service where nursing visits are conducted via video calls, supports elderly individuals to live independently in their own homes. In Raseborg, this option has been available to seniors for more than two years.
Anneli Rautiainen, an Ekenäs resident, lights up when she talks about remote home care.
“Despite having a circle of friends and family, I still find these video calls invaluable. Being Karelian, I love the company of others, and I can be quite the chatterbox!” Anneli says with a laugh.
Remote home care calls Anneli daily, in addition to a weekly in-person visit from the home care nurse.
For Anneli, remote home care has become a significant part of her daily routine, offering her the support, safety, and companionship she needs while allowing her to live independently at home.
“The nurse checks on my well-being and makes sure I've taken my medication, for example. Through the video calls, the familiar nurse ensures that everything is okay and quickly notices if there's any distress.”
Miia Törmänen, who works in Raseborg's home and remote care services, clarifies the role of a nurse.
“Clients in remote home care might need reminders for things such as taking medication, measuring blood sugar, eating, or personal hygiene. Should there be any concerns about a client’s condition, we arrange for a nurse to visit them. When necessary, we’re prepared to send an ambulance. And if a client doesn't respond to our calls, we promptly make a home visit and notify the relatives.
Video Calls Made Easy
The tablet computer provided by the remote home care services is incredibly easy to use. Anneli demonstrates how answering a call is as simple as a single swipe of a finger.
“This device is super easy to use, even if you're generally not comfortable with technology. The nurse will guide you through the basics and help you in using the device.”
Miia explains that remote home care is also accessible for individuals with memory disorders.
“As long as the client can follow verbal instructions, they can benefit from remote home care.”
In addition to regular calls, clients have access to weekly online group activities. Referrals to remote home care come through Senior Info, integrating it within the broader spectrum of home care services.
Anneli Rautiainen values the balance remote home care strikes between security and independence.
“Remote home care enables me to live independently in the comfort of my own home. What more could I ask for!"
