Bromarv in Raseborg to be included in the national vaccination programme against tick-borne encephalitis
The national vaccination programme has expanded to offer the vaccine against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in the Bromarv area of Raseborg. Namely, in the 10570 postal code area, where the disease has seen a significant rise over the last five years.
Besides Bromarv, the programme will continue offering TBE vaccinations in the following postal code areas of the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County: Espoo (Suvisaaristo), Lohja (Ojamo, Lylyinen/Hormajärvi, Vohloinen/Virkkala, Kirkniemi), and Kirkkonummi (Luoma & Masala).
The vaccinations are free for all permanent residents and long-term vacationers aged three and above in these areas. The vaccine is particularly important for those who frequently spend time outdoors in nature during the summer. The vaccination series includes three doses. The best time to start the series is by early spring at the latest, so that two doses are received before the summer. The third dose is given the following year.
Updates to vaccine recommendations for other risk areas
The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) also issues vaccine recommendations for areas outside the national vaccination programme. THL recommends self-paid TBE vaccinations, for example, to residents and cottage owners who spend time in nature.
You can find the number of cases per municipality and municipality-specific vaccine recommendations on the map application on the THL website(external link) or in the chart(external link).
Protect yourself from tick bites
The TBE vaccine only protects you from the virus that causes tick-borne encephalitis. It does not protect you from other tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme disease, or stop ticks from attaching to the skin. The best way to prevent any tick-borne disease is to avoid tick bites.
TBE vaccinations under the national vaccination programme in the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County
The basic TBE vaccination series consists of three doses. If you have never been vaccinated before, you will get all three doses for free. If you have started the basic series but not finished it, you will also get the remaining doses for free as part of the vaccination programme. However, the vaccination programme does not cover booster doses for those who have completed the three-dose series. You should get the first two doses between February and April to ensure protection before the tick season starts.
Residents of Bromarv (postal code 10570) can receive the vaccination at child and maternity health clinics, school health services, or health centres.
