Vaping and Nicotine Products: Useful Information for Guardians
On 29 November 2023, the wellbeing services counties of Uusimaa and the city of Helsinki hosted an online event for guardians in the region, informing them about the health risks and legal issues of vaping and nicotine products.
Speakers included Elina Hartikainen, a health promotion specialist from the Cancer Society of Finland, and Hannu Väänänen, Chief Inspector of the Western Uusimaa Police Department. They shed light on the harmful health effects of vapes (electronic cigarettes) and nicotine products, as well as the blackmail, threats, and violence linked to the illegal trade of vapes.
The webinar drew 600 participants, sparking numerous inquiries and highlighting the widespread concern over the growing use of vapes among young people. The easy availability of these products is particularly alarming. The session offered practical advice for guardians on how to discuss this topic at home with children of different ages and informed about available resources for quitting and dealing with the illegal trade. It emphasised the importance of guardians being fully present, actively listening, and fostering open communication. These are the key elements for effectively supporting children and adolescents in navigating life's various challenges.
