Children’s rights in foster care

19.11.2024 5.30

Children have special rights during foster care, ensuring high-quality living conditions that meet their needs. Foster care refers to situations where children, following a decision by the child welfare services, live outside the home.

Life situations leading to a client relationship in foster care may be rather challenging for children and young people. Thus, it is extremely important to build trustworthy and secure solutions for everyday life together with the family care or institutional care services and a social worker.

Children and young people should also know their own rights, which is why we have prepared with young co-developers (former child welfare clients) an information flyer on the rights in foster care, intended for children and young people.

The information flyer on the rights in foster care is based on the Child Welfare Act. Read more about the topic on the THL website in Finnish or Swedish: Lapsen oikeudet sijaishuollossa(external link).

Are you interested in developing the child welfare services based on your own experience?
