"We’re creating something new together!"

A new daytime activity unit opened in Haukilahti, Espoo, at Haukilahdenkatu 19 on March 6, 2025. The disability service unit offers both daytime and work activities.

Haukilahti can accommodate about 40 clients. The activities have started with a smaller number of clients and staff, but the new unit has attracted a lot of interest, and the volume is gradually increasing.

"Our vision is that everyone feels valued just as they are," summarizes Michaela Jäppinen, the unit’s Supervising Counsellor.

Jäppinen is pleased with how smoothly the unit's activities have started. A diverse and professional team started in Haukilahti in March, and daily routines formed quickly. The broad opportunity to influence the development of the unit’s activities is motivating for the entire team.

“Few get the chance to be part of something from the very beginning like this! Here you truly get to create something new together, not just maintain what already exists," Jäppinen explains.

The spacious dining area offers plenty of space for people to enjoy meals or creative activities together.

Versatile facilities support the unit’s activities

At the unit, clients can participate in either day or work activities. The work activities of disability services are aimed at individuals who want to develop skills needed in working life. At Haukilahti, clients have, for example, done yard work, cleaned up the surrounding area, and worked in the unit’s kitchen.

"All the tasks have been fun! This is a fun place," says Ossi, a client who has participated in the unit’s activities since its opening.

Clients and staff have together explored the nearby grocery store, library, and recycling center. The unit’s excellent transport connections make it easy to get around.

The spacious kitchen, which was previously part of a lunch restaurant, is now used for daytime activities.

Since the facilities were previously designed for elderly services, Haukilahti offers, among other things, a large kitchen and spacious restroom facilities. In the gym hall, clients can practice expression skills and make music together. There are also excellent opportunities for outdoor activities, with sports fields and an outdoor gym in the yard. Haukilahti Beach also is just a stone’s throw away.

The gym storage is stocked with a wide range of equipment for clients to use.

Daily life shared in two languages

The daytime activity unit in Haukilahti is bilingual, which adds value to the daily life of both clients and employees. Some staff members are native Swedish speakers, but Finnish is also spoken in the unit.

“Our goal is to ensure that every client receives services in their native language,” says Jäppinen.

Jäppinen finds it great how diversely employees can develop their skills in Haukilahti. Finnish-speaking clients have also found the bilingual activities exciting.

“I’ve already learned the days of the week in Swedish!” says Ossi with a smile.
