New project promotes children’s oral health

5.2.2026 11.41

A project related to the National Health Promotion Programme (Terveydeksi programme) has been launched in oral healthcare in the Western Uusimaa wellbeing services county.

The aim is to reduce the need for general anaesthesia in dental treatments of children by strengthening the promotion of oral health and developing care pathways for children who already need general anaesthesia in dental care.

Why is this important?

The decision to resort to general anaesthesia in dental care is often made because of cavities – a situation that can largely be prevented with good oral care, healthy eating habits and early support.

Key measures in the project

  • Closer cooperation with internal and external stakeholders such as maternity and child health clinic services, municipalities and organisations
  • Developing reporting to gain a better understanding of the distribution of oral diseases in the population
  • Use of video appointments in the care path and for guidance visits of parents expecting their first child
  • Strengthening the competence of professionals through relevant training

The development work carried out in oral health care in the Terveydeksi programme will continue until 31 March 2027.
