Hepatitis C testing for people who inject or have injected drugs

Do you inject drugs, or have you done so in the past? Hepatitis C can be completely symptom-free for years. That is why it is important to get tested, even if you feel well at the moment.

We are organising hepatitis C testing across the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County from 11 September 2026 to 30 June 2027.

During weeks 38–40, open testing sessions will be available at the following locations:

Testing is free of charge, confidential and quick.

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver. Some of those infected recover on their own, but in other cases the infection becomes chronic. Prolonged infection can damage the liver and increase the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Today, hepatitis C can be treated effectively and quickly with medication. The medication treatment lasts 8–12 weeks.

During the visit, the following tests are carried out using a finger-prick blood sample:

• hepatitis C test
• rapid HIV test
• rapid hepatitis B test

A painless liver health assessment is also carried out using FibroScan.

The results are usually ready in about an hour.

You can stay on site and wait for the results or agree to receive them later by phone.

If any of your test results are positive, we will refer you for treatment or further examinations. If you need medication for hepatitis C, we will plan your treatment at a health or social welfare unit where it is as easy as possible for you to complete the treatment.

With government funding, we are carrying out a hepatitis C project in the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County until 30 June 2027. The project aims to reduce new hepatitis C infections, make testing easier to access and ensure that people who are infected receive treatment as quickly as possible.

As part of the project, we have developed a testing and treatment model for hepatitis C. Outreach testing across the wellbeing services county is part of this work.

We also cooperate with the City of Helsinki and the Vantaa and Kerava Wellbeing Services County on their corresponding projects. This cooperation helps prevent hepatitis C infections and improve access to treatment across the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.
