Teaching of Finnish as a second language (S2) is available to students who do not have native-level Finnish language skills. S2 is a subject that parallels the syllabus of mother tongue and literature, and it replaces this subject either partly or entirely.

The purpose of S2 education is to develop the child’s Finnish language skills comprehensively so that the child can understand things and become understood in different interactions and will have the prerequisites to learn the language in a way that suits the child’s age level.

The student will receive S2 education until their Finnish language skills achieve native levels in all sectors of language proficiency. This teaching is not counted as remedial teaching or special needs education.
