Enhancing daytime activities with remote options

8.2.2024 7.22

Disability Services has started to offer regular remote daytime activities. This new service enriches our existing daytime activities and allows clients to join in from anywhere. Remote daytime activities are an innovative service developed by the Digital Service Unit of Disability Services.

Remote day time activities with special instructor Essi Riikonen.

Remote daytime activities typically last for an hour and are conducted via Teams video calls. This setup enables clients to join in from the disability services’ activity centre, their homes, or anywhere else, either on their own or with an instructor. Each session is a blend of live and pre-recorded segments, utilizing content from the Ella application created by the Disability Services. Led by our special instructors, these sessions are designed to draw on the unique skills and expertise of each instructor. Activities may include group exercises, sing-alongs, or sensory stimulation, as remarked by Janne Kortelainen, our digital services manager.

In response to client feedback, we recently added a discussion period at the end of our previous session. This enabled direct interaction between participants and the group leader. According to instructor Samuli Niemi, this interactive feature is here to stay. He highlights the enthusiasm this segment sparked among clients, who enjoyed sending greetings to peers and friends across their network. Our previous session was attended by approximately 150 clients across the Wellbeing Services County and received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

“By national standards, our remote daytime activities are already well designed, skilfully implemented, and high in quality. Also, our Ella app is a part of remote daytime activities, in a form not bound by time or place. Looking ahead, we may want to further expand our remote and digital services,” Kortelainen adds.
