Freedom-of-choice pilot for people aged 65 and over

1.9.2025 7.55

From 1 September 2025, anyone aged 65 or over can visit a private general practitioner (doctor) for the same appointment fee as in public primary health care. In addition to the appointment fee, you pay 50% of the maximum price for certain tests and procedures ordered during the appointment. This system is part of a national "freedom-of-choice pilot."

If you choose a private doctor, the private clinic is also responsible for interpreting lab results and arranging any follow-up care. Professionals in the wellbeing services county will not perform tests ordered by a private doctor and do not interpret test results issued by private providers.

If you wish to transfer your care to the wellbeing services county, your need for treatment will be assessed by the wellbeing services county. In that case, please contact your assigned health station via the Lunna (external link)Digital Clinic or by phone. Contact details are available on the health station's webpage.
