The Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County will offer NIPT screening to expectant parents at the first prenatal visit at the maternity clinic starting 16 February

12.2.2026 13.24

The Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County will start offering a prenatal screening test, or NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing(external link)), instead of the combined screening for expectant parents for whom the test is suitable.

The screening will be offered to pregnant clients whose first visit to the maternity clinic takes place on or after 16 February 2026.

At the first pregnancy visit, we will personally inform customers about the possibility of NIPT screening. The suitability of NIPT screening is being assessed at the maternity and child health clinic and the HUS Fetal Research Unit.

NIPT screening for fetal chromosomal abnormalities is performed on the expectant mother's blood sample. Screening examines the fetus's risk of the most common chromosomal abnormalities. NIPT screening is a more reliable examination than a combination screening.

If NIPT screening is not suitable for you, we will continue to offer the option of combination screening.
