At the occupational therapist’s appointment

The first appointment with an occupational therapist is an assessment and guidance visit. During the first visit, the occupational therapist assesses how the service will continue. The occupational therapist talks with the family to get to know the child’s everyday life. They determine the areas in which the child needs help and practice. Sometimes only one appointment during which the occupational therapist advises the family is sufficient. Sometimes the occupational therapist may help the child and family for a longer period of time. The occupational therapist talks with the family and sets goals for the following meetings.

Children usually enjoy occupational therapist’s appointments. In occupational therapy, the child practices the skills needed in everyday life through tasks and play. For example, the child may practice drawing, using a pen, getting dressed, eating, playing, moving or concentrating.

The occupational therapist gives the child exercises to do at home and advises the parents on how they can practice together with the child. It is important that the parents attend the appointment and the whole family is committed to the occupational therapy. This way, the occupational therapy will benefit the child, and the child’s skills will develop. The aim is to make the child’s everyday life easier at home, in the daycare centre and at school.
