Distribution of self-care supplies

The Medical Supplies Unit provides medical supplies to clients for the treatment of long-term illnesses at home. Distribution follows our specific guidelines. To qualify, clients require a referral from a healthcare professional. Such referrals can be obtained from health centres or specialised medical care units, for example.

Conditions for receiving the Service

Necessary medical supplies are available at no cost to individuals with medically diagnosed long-term conditions lasting three months or more. The decision to grant free medical supplies is made by the client's primary healthcare professional who will also issue the necessary referral. Thereafter, the healthcare professional will regularly monitor the client's specific medical supply needs, as detailed in the client's care plan. Our centralised Medical Supplies Unit reviews all referrals before distributing medical products. The distribution of free medical supplies is based on the Health Care Act, the Act on Client Charges in Healthcare and Social Welfare, and on guidelines from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. Home nursing includes the provision of supplies for treating long-term illnesses as specified in the care plan. Detailed criteria can be found in the distribution guidelines.
The service is free of charge.
