Activities that promote well-being refer to activities that contribute to living a fulfilling life, health, and improved daily experiences. Key objectives include mitigating loneliness and increasing social participation opportunities for the elderly.

Since 2022, Masala’s neighbourhood club, hosted in the Valkokulta service home, has been a cheerful gathering spot for local seniors. Many have enjoyed the weekly gatherings right from the start. Newcomers are warmly welcomed to join in for a fragrant cup of coffee and engaging activities.

The Wellbeing Services County organizes these gatherings as a neighbourhood club in Masala, Kirkkonummi. These and similar gatherings are cost-free with no political or religious affiliations. Everyone can participate in a way that suits them. As one of the regular attendees notes, “You can come just to relax and enjoy the company if you like.”

The club is a great place for conversation and engagement, featuring a changing, weekly roster of activities. Attendees are keen to share their experiences.

"I joined out of sheer curiosity, and it was so worth it!” says one member.
"I stumbled upon the club by accident after spotting a sign on the street,” adds another.
"I saw a brochure at the Fyyri library, and it encouraged me to join in,” another member shares.
The group consensus is clear: “It’s wonderful that such activities are organized for seniors, and we don't have to stay cooped up at home!”

Activities at the club have ranged from bingo and birdwatching to music reviews, reading sessions, mölkky (a Finnish throwing game), exercise, nutrition workshops, and even a guest appearance by the legendary Finnish singer, Eino Grön. Special occasions like Valentine's Day and Kalevala Day are also celebrated. Members are encouraged to contribute their ideas for future programme to the club coordinators.

Club members express appreciation for the regularity and thoughtful organization of the events.

“It’s so wonderful to come here every week! The club coordinator, Pirjo, plays an important role. I mean, we have no shortage of things to talk about and stories to share, but thanks to Pirjo, each gathering becomes that’s both intriguing and beneficial,” the club members explain as they dive into a brain puzzle that triggers waves of laughter.

No One Should Be Left Alone

The Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County coordinates a variety of programs designed to foster social connections and companionship among the elderly.Besides the Wellbeing Services County, municipalities, parishes, private actors, associations, organisations, and adult education centres also participate in promoting well-being by organising activities.
Kirkkonummi offers a wide range of activities for the elderly.

“The municipality provides various physical activities. The libraries in Fyyri, Masala, and Veikkola host an array of events, from musical performances to educational talks on aging. The parish also plays a significant role in combating loneliness among the elderly. Additionally, Ellenin Olohuone (“Ellen’s Living Room”), a meeting point in the Kirsikka shopping centre, welcomes people of all ages, providing a friendly and accessible meeting place. Local associations also arrange hobby activities and excursions. For example, the heart association in Kirkkonummi is particularly active in organising events,” says activity coordinator Pirjo Heinojoki-Pellinen.

The Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County runs communal “Olkkari” gatherings, currently held at the service home Valkokulta in Masala, Kirkkonummi, on Wednesdays from 10:00-11:30 and at the downtown Library Fyyri on Thursdays from 13:00-14:30.

“These ‘Olkkari’ gatherings are specifically tailored for those who haven't found their fit among activities for the elderly or who are hesitant about joining. During the course of the activities, we also actively engage in supporting well-being; for instance, we explore the significance of leg strength for the elderly in a fun and supportive manner,” Heinojoki-Pellinen says.

Heinojoki-Pellinen encourages seniors to venture out, participate in events, or simply meet new people.

“There's nothing to lose. Many seniors who tried group activities ended up staying for a long time, some even for several years. Sometimes finding the right thing for you requires some trial and error. It's good to try out various activities.”

Invite Your Friends

Feedback from seniors is overwhelmingly positive and appreciative.

“The company of others, shared experiences, and collaborative efforts are seen as important and motivate people to join. Such experiences are often the highlight of their day, and the pleasant atmosphere in the group brings joy for a longer time."

However, there’s feedback indicating a gap in communication about available groups or events.

“Many ask: “Why didn’t I come here sooner? Why didn’t I know about these activities? Clearly, we still have work to do in ensuring that information about available groups and events reaches more seniors.”

Heinojoki-Pellinen trusts in the power of collaboration.

“Tell your elderly relatives, friends, or neighbours, and invite them to join. Why not come together?” she suggests.
