This year, the national vaccination programme against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) will expand to the districts of Kurttila and Vanttila in the postcode area of Kauklahti in Espoo (02780) and to Upinniemi (postcode area 02470) and the postcode area 02480 in Kirkkonummi. Appointment booking for vaccinations in these new areas is now open. Vaccinations will start in week 10 at the latest.

Where can I receive the TBE vaccine as part of the national vaccination programme?

Children receive the vaccine at child health clinics or in the school healthcare services.

Adults are vaccinated at health stations: Residents of Kurttila and Vanttila at the Samaria Health Station and residents in Upinniemi and the postcode area 02480 (e.g. Porkkala) at the Kirkkonummi Wellbeing Centre.

If you are entitled to the vaccine because you have a cottage in a risk area, the vaccine will be provided by the municipality where your cottage is located in. For example, individuals who spend the summer in Porkkala can get the TBE vaccination in Kirkkonummi. People in military service in Upinniemi will be vaccinated in the garrison.

Who is eligible for a free TBE vaccination?

The basic vaccine series of three doses, i.e. the initial three TBE vaccines, is offered free of charge to persons aged three years and over who reside or have a permanent holiday house in a risk area defined by THL. Booster vaccinations are at your own expense even if you previously should have acquired the basic series of the vaccine at your own expense.

TBE vaccination at your own expense

If you do not live or are not staying in a risk area but want to protect yourself against tick-borne encephalitis, you can still get vaccinated at your own expense. You can request a prescription for the TBE vaccine by calling your local health station. Buy the vaccine at a pharmacy and book a vaccination appointment online or by phone. You can also get the TBE vaccine from private healthcare providers.

To achieve effective protection, it is recommended to start the vaccination series already in winter, well before the tick season, which starts in May in areas such as Åland. You can find a map of the risk areas for tick-borne encephalitis on the THL website(external link).
