Services for Respiratory Paralysis Patients to be Organized by the Wellbeing Services County
The new Disability Services Act took effect on 1 January 2025, transferring the responsibility for organizing services for individuals who rely on respirators from healthcare services to Disability Services. Starting 1 February, the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County will oversee services for patients previously registered under specialized healthcare and the HUS Respiratory Paralysis Unit.
This includes arranging basic-level medical services for both transferring patients and new clients. However, HUS will continue to provide specialized medical care and manage medical equipment. Both HUS and the Wellbeing Services County have separately informed patients about these changes. Rehabilitation services for patients will remain unchanged.
The new law includes a three-year transition period, during which the current legislation for respiratory paralysis patients will be phased out. Patients can choose to switch to services under the new Disability Services Act at any time during this period by submitting an application to Disability Services. This application will initiate a service needs assessment—a process where we work together with the patient to determine their individual service needs and preferences.
