A systemic approach supports families through multiprofessional collaboration
At Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County, we developed and piloted a systematic approach in a project designed to improve outcomes and streamline services for families. The project ran from 1 January 2024 to 30 June 2025 as part of the EU-funded Sustainable Growth Programme for Finland (RRP).
The systemic approach brings the client, their loved ones, and professionals from different fields together to build a shared understanding and coordinated support. Jaana Ryynänen, Senior Social Worker and Project Manager, puts it this way:
“The biggest shift is in mindset: the client is not merely a recipient of services; we also utilize their knowledge and support networks."
What do we mean by a systemic approach?
A comprehensive, network-based way of working in which the client is an active participant. In practice, this means:
- the client and their close ones take an active role,
- professionals from different sectors work together, and
- the work is grounded in trust, collaboration, and shared goals.
For example, a school nurse is not left to manage an anxious young person’s situation alone. Instead, they convene a network—with the family and close supporters, and, where needed, social work, youth work, and mental health services—to address the situation together with the client.
“When professionals draw on one another’s expertise, the pressure to cope alone eases and the impact grows,” Ryynänen notes.
The work continues as everyday practice
During the project we ran hands-on workshops where professionals practised concrete tools and methods. Feedback was enthusiastic and encouraging. Now that the project has ended, the approach continues as part of day-to-day work, and the Syty Experts group is further developing orientation materials and training. The model applies broadly across sectors—for example, in social and health services, education, informal care, and youth work.
“The systemic approach isn’t entirely new, and many people already do much of this. But when we act deliberately and together, every encounter can have more impact.”
