The Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County uses AI to modernise documentation

In the future, AI can support professionals with tasks such as documentation, compiling information, drafting statements and referrals, and decision-making. The Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County’s most extensive planned AI deployment to date is Tandem, an AI scribe developed by Tandem Health. The tool will be introduced gradually from September 2026. The aim is to roll out the tool to all of the wellbeing services county’s approximately 7,000 social welfare and healthcare professionals by the end of 2027. However, responsibility for the client’s or patient’s care, decisions and documentation will always remain with the professional.

“We want to help shape the future of social welfare and healthcare services, not simply follow its development. The introduction of Tandem is a significant step in our broader efforts to use technology to provide residents with smoother services and professionals with better tools,” says Nelli Myllylä, Director of Development at the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County.

AI-assisted documentation has been piloted in a range of social welfare and healthcare services in Western Uusimaa over the past two years. Based on the conversation during an appointment or meeting, AI produces a documentation draft for the professional to review. The professional always completes, edits and approves the draft. Experience from the pilot shows that AI can make documentation easier and reduce the associated workload. These lessons are now being applied as the solution is rolled out on a larger scale. 

“Effective change management is essential when introducing AI. Our experience in physiotherapy has shown that a phased rollout, change ambassadors in each unit, strong support from management and close cooperation with the supplier are key to success. This is how AI becomes a natural part of professionals’ day-to-day work,” says Sanna Vuorinen, Head of the Rehabilitation Services Unit within Health Services.

The Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County aims to gradually develop new ways of working in which technology supports professionals at different stages of their work. AI-assisted documentation is the first step towards more extensive automation of work. The aim is to streamline professionals’ work, improve service quality and support staff wellbeing, while further strengthening the wellbeing services county’s position as a pioneer in the use of technology.

For the wellbeing services county, the introduction of Tandem is not simply a one-off investment in technology. The wellbeing services county’s vision is that AI will take care of more routine tasks in the future, allowing professionals to devote more time to work that calls for expertise, interaction and human presence.
