Cohousing for mental health and substance abuse clients

We provide communal housing for mental health and substance abuse patients who need daily support. To receive communal housing, contact the social work of your municipality’s housing services.

Cohousing is a housing service that is provided as per the Social Welfare act to adults who need daily support for the management of daily activities and taking care of themselves due to mental health and/or substance abuse problems. The service is relevant when outpatient care services or supported housing are not sufficient to support your housing. The service includes a dwelling on which you will make a lease agreement with the service provider. In the service, you can receive help and support according to your needs, e.g.: - for monitoring your health - for quitting intoxicants/reducing their use - for carrying out medical treatment - for monitoring your mental well-being - for personal hygiene - for nutrition/cooking - for maintaining a daily rhythm - for managing finances - for acting in interaction situations - for independent decision-making - for dealing with authorities - for going outside the home. The service includes daytime/group activities. The staff are present in the housing unit on a daily basis from approximately 7 to 21 and have special expertise in mental health and substance abuse problems. The aim of the service is to maintain and promote your ability to function and to help you rehabilitate into a less supported form of housing. Cohousing is voluntary, but it requires you to be motivated to accept the service and act according to your service plan. You are eligible for the service when it has been assessed based on the Social Welfare Act that you are in need of cohousing. Your service needs are assessed with you on a regular basis. The service is temporary.

Conditions for receiving the Service

The service covers all clients who are assessed to have a need for housing service pursuant to the Social Welfare Act and who have been granted cohousing. The service is intended for adults whose functional ability has decreased significantly due to a diagnosed mental illness and/or substance abuse that requires care and who need daily support for managing their everyday lives and looking after themselves. Cohousing is relevant when outpatient care services and services provided at home or supported housing are not sufficient to support your housing situation. Clients directed to the service require support for monitoring their health and performing daily tasks related to taking medication, taking care of hygiene, eating, monitoring health, cleaning and financial matters.

The service is subject to a charge.

You will find the prices of the service on the site for client fees.
