Housing services for the elderly
The service offered in nursing homes is officially referred to as round-the-clock service housing. A nursing home is a viable option when you need continuous care and attention around the clock, and living at home is no longer possible.
The process of applying to a nursing home starts with contacting Senior Info, the counselling and client guidance unit for the elderly. At Senior Info, we will assess and determine the type of service you or your loved one needs. Senior Info will also provide you a written confirmation of the services granted to you.

After you have been granted a place in a nursing home, you can search for a suitable nursing home via Hoivakotiportaali (Finnish/Swedish only). Senior Info can assist you in choosing a nursing home.
You can also visit nursing homes in person before making your choice. Once you have found a few suitable options, you should inform Senior Info about your choices.
If your preferred nursing home is full, you can opt to join a waiting list. During the waiting period, you may choose to reside in another nursing home. Once a place becomes available in your preferred nursing home, you have the option to either move in there or decide to stay in the nursing home where you have resided during the waiting period.
Some nursing homes receive government funding. These nursing homes are marked as ARA homes. To receive a place from an ARA home, your assets must not exceed certain limits. There are no asset-related restrictions in other nursing homes. More information about applying to ARA homes (Finnish only)
All nursing homes featured at Hoivakotiportaali adhere to the common principles of service content and quality set by the municipalities of Western Uusimaa.
Our staff are continuously present to provide necessary assistance and to ensure that residents receive the health and medical care they need.
In addition, the staff will ensure that residents can lead an active life according to their own habits and preferences. For example, residents can spend time outdoors and engage in physical activities or cultural pursuits. Residents live in rented apartments within the nursing home, with meals included in the service. It is possible to reside in a nursing home until the end of one's life.
Nursing home residents pay a client fee to the Wellbeing Services County as well as rent to the service provider. The client fee is determined based on income. The price of rent also affects the amount of the client fee.
You can find more information about client fees in housing services via the link below. On the same page, you will also find the income statement for service housing form and the application for taking medication costs into account in the client fees.
The Wellbeing Services County monitors the operation of nursing homes to ensure compliance with quality requirements and other criteria. This is also why supervisory visits are made to nursing homes. Some supervisory visits are scheduled in advance with nursing homes, while others are conducted unannounced. A supervisory visit is also carried out when residents, relatives, or other involved parties report concerns related to the nursing home.
