Support person for persons with disabilities

The support person acts as a friend and companion and supports social relationships, among others.

The support person service is intended for you who need support for participating in society and creating and maintaining social relationships as well as support for a difficult life situation or due to another reason.

We can also grant you a support person to support your development and your becoming independent. The support person acts as your friend and keeps your company at home or outside the home, for example at the cinema or theatre or when running errands.

Your housing arrangement does not matter. You can live in your own home, in service housing or foster care. You can independently recruit and choose your support person. If necessary, a Disability Services employee can assist in the search for the support person.

The support person is not supposed to replace a professional or provide personal assistance intended for persons with severe disabilities. Your family member or worker (e.g. an instructor at a service housing unit) cannot act as your support person. The support person must be at least 16 years old.

Support persons are volunteers who are not required to have professional skills or experience in working with children. They are interviewed and their suitability for acting as a support person is assessed. Potential support persons are trained for the position.

Conditions for receiving the Service
