TBE vaccinations in the Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral disease transmitted through tick bites. Vaccination provides protection. The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) designates the high-risk areas covered by the Finnish National Vaccination Programme.

Who is eligible for a free TBE vaccination?

A primary series of three vaccines is offered free of charge to persons aged three years and over who live in or have a permanent summer residence in a risk area defined by the THL. In Western Uusimaa Wellbeing Services County, the primary vaccination series is also provided free of charge to children attending early childhood education or primary education in a designated risk area. Booster vaccinations are at your own expense, even if you have received your primary vaccine series at your own expense in the past.

THL reviews the National Vaccination Programme and the designated risk areas annually, based on newly reported TBE cases recorded in the Finnish National Infectious Diseases Register.

In 2026, the national TBE vaccination programme will be expanded to include the following areas in Western Uusimaa:

Schedule for TBE vaccinations 2026

Appointment booking for free TBE vaccinations under the National Vaccination Programme will open by phone and online on Wednesday, 4 February 2026.

If vaccinations have previously been available in your area, appointments for TBE vaccinations may be offered from the beginning of the year. Vaccinations in all programme areas will begin no later than week 10.

Cancelling a vaccination appointment

Please cancel your appointment by 12:00 on the working day prior to your appointment. Please note that for those aged 18 and above, a fee of EUR 56.70 will be charged for unused and uncancelled appointments.

Where can I receive the TBE vaccine as part of the national vaccination programme?

Children receive the vaccine at maternity and child health clinics or in the school healthcare services. Adults are vaccinated at health stations.

If you are entitled to the vaccine because you have cottage in a risk area, the vaccine will be provided by the municipality where your cottage is located in. For example, those who spend the summer in Porkkala can get the TBE vaccination in Kirkkonummi. People in military service in Upinniemi will be vaccinated in the garrison.

Health stations

Book an appointment online or by phone on weekdays (Mon–Fri 8:00–15:30). Select your health station and choose “vaccinations”. Your number will be saved and we will call you back.

School and student health services

School and student health nurses will inform students in risk areas about vaccinations via Wilma messages.

Vaccination appointments are booked with your school nurse online or by phone:

Maternity and child health clinics

Children aged 3–6 will be vaccinated at their maternity and child health clinic. Book an appointment online or by calling the clinic’s telephone service.

If you cannot book your appointment online, you can leave a callback request in the telephone service of the maternity and child health clinic at 029 151 2400 on weekdays from 9.00 to 12.00.

TBE vaccination at your own expense

If you do not live or are not staying in a risk area but want to protect yourself against tick-borne encephalitis, you can obtain the TBE vaccine yourself. You can request a prescription for the TBE vaccine by calling your local health centre. Buy the vaccine from a pharmacy and book a vaccination appointment online or over the phone. TBE vaccinations are also provided by private health care companies.

To achieve effective protection, it is recommended to start the vaccination series already in winter, well before the tick season, which starts in May in areas such as Åland. You can find a map of the risk areas for tick-borne encephalitis on the THL website.(external link)
