Well-being from culture

Did you know that culture has been shown to contribute to your health and well-being, while helping you meet new people? Cultural well-being includes the physical and natural experiences of arts and culture, as well as play and creativity. Culture as a hobby offers different experiences, ideas and perspectives as well as the opportunity to meet new people.

Visual arts and music, for example, help to express emotions. You can enrich your life by, among other things, going to dances, the theatre or concerts, or by making crafts or art.

Well-being from culture

The effects of culture and the arts on well-being have been widely studied. They have been found to, for example:

  • prevent and reduce negative emotions such as anxiety, depression and sadness
  • help people cope with mental challenges
  • help reduce loneliness and social isolation.

On the Taikusydän website (in Finnish)(external link) you can find a short introductory course and more information about cultural well-being.

Culture gives you the opportunity to do things yourself, while strengthening your creativity and helping you to deal with your emotions. Finding your own strengths and using your creativity help you to meet other people. At its best, making and experiencing art helps to build a meaningful life and to deal with many emotions.
