Rehabilitation services for children and young people
We support the overall functioning and wellbeing of children and young people.
We offer speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy for children and young people. Access to the services can be gained through a referral from early childhood education, a child health clinic, student welfare or healthcare, or by booking an appointment independently.
In speech therapy for children, we provide support and guidance related to children’s interaction skills and linguistic development. The aim of speech therapy is to improve your child’s ability to function in everyday life.
Speech therapy can also support linguistic development when there are concerns about the development of all a multilingual child’s languages.
The speech therapist guides your family and other people in your child's immediate surroundings on how to support your child's linguistic development and communication. If necessary, the child or young person is referred to specialised medical care.
In addition to your family, the speech therapist also cooperates with your child's other surrounding environment, such as their place of early childhood education and care or school. If necessary, cooperation will also involve other parties. If you are concerned about your child's or young person’s
speech development or unclear speech,
linguistic development or speech comprehension,
interaction skills,
stuttering,
voice disorder,
pronunciation errors and/or
difficulties in eating
you can bring up the matter, for example, at the maternity and child health clinic, in early childhood education and care or at school.
Accessing the service
It is possible to seek speech therapy through a referral made by a social and health care professional, such as the maternity and child health clinic or school nurse, or through a recommendation made by a special needs teacher in early childhood education and care.
If you are concerned about your child's development, bring the matter up with the maternity and child health clinic, your child's day care provider or school health care. Speech therapists also provide guidance via telephone to parents/guardians without a referral (see the contact details below).

Occupational therapy can be useful if your child has challenges with performing everyday activities as expected of their age. Everyday problem situations can include eating, getting dressed, moving from one place to another as well as spending time and playing with friends. The child may have difficulties in concentrating and/or performing activities that require fine and gross motor skills.
The occupational therapist will individually assess and observe your child's ability to function in their everyday environment. The assessment is carried out in cooperation with the parents/guardians and the child's place of early childhood education and care or school. Together with your family, the occupational therapist will agree on how occupational therapy will be arranged in your family's everyday life. If necessary, we will also cooperate with other family centre employees during occupational therapy, such as a speech therapist, psychologist, or family worker, in order to support your child's rehabilitation.
